This week begins Anti-Poverty Week, held from 13th to the 19th of October. This campaign is all about encouraging Australians to organise and take part in activities aimed at highlighting and overcoming issues of poverty and hardship. The Midland Information, Debt and Legal Advocacy Service Inc. (MIDLAS) believes in supporting vulnerable and disadvantaged people within our community to achieve a better way of life, and takes great pleasure in supporting this campaign. MIDLAS encourages everyone to become more aware, informed, and involved in activities in their local community to reduce poverty and hardship.
The Australian Council of Social Services (ACOSS) reported that in 2010 there were 2,265,000, living below the poverty line. This represented those that were on a disposable income of less than $358 per week (for a single adult) and included 575,000 Australian children. ACOSS Chief Executive Officer, Dr Cassandra Goldie states that “in a wealthy country like Australia, this is simply inexcusable” (ABC News, 2012). Welfare and health organisations, schools, youth groups, government departments, local councils, and an array of other groups are therefore dedicating themselves to hosting events this week to help reduce poverty and hardship in Australian and overseas.
